About

Thumki Learning Grounds [TLG] is a grassroots initiative formed in 2010 to create sustainable rural development strategies that are both economically viable and ecologically responsible. The effects of haphazard urbanization and rampant modernization is leading to various environmental repercussions including pollution of water sources, depletion of minerals in the soil, rampant deforestation and other sustainable practices. Grappling with these forces, TLG was created to provide sustainable alternatives to mitigate the impacts of climate change, natural resource degradation and social inequities. 

Main Goals

1) Create TLG centre to demonstrate sustainable land management techniques within a 1 hectare plot of land that can be used as an educational base for the community.

2) Support the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants project to train and work with farmers to build alternative livelihoods based on conservation and management of indigenous herbs.

3) Protect and highlight significant public spaces and create structures rooted to the culture and spirit of the community.

Project history

TLG is an evolution within the Bhedetar Model VDC project which has a 10 year history starting 2001 when volunteers and aid agencies worked together with a thriving community to bring water access to Thumki and Namje villages. Since then, five new schools have been constructed, scholarship programs have been launched, library projects initiated with the support of national and international grants. All the initiatives have been led by strong local leaders and community members trying to initiate change in their own communities.
